Cardinals linked to trade for polarizing Yankees' INF that would be a mistake

Chaim Bloom, the team's owner, may consider adding veterans to bolster the roster. MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided.com suggested that the Cardinals might be interested in acquiring polarizing Yankees infielder Anthony Volpe. However, this potential trade would be a significant misstep.

Murray argued that other teams would likely pursue Volpe during the offseason, and given Bloom's experience working with the Red Sox and Rays, he would be well-equipped to handle a deal with the Yankees. The Cardinals would benefit from more infield help, particularly at shortstop and third base, where Masyn Winn and Nolan Gorman have shown limited offensive potential.

While Volpe has displayed some defensive skills as a shortstop, his offensive production has been subpar, with a .671 OPS this season and only 1.3 bWAR in 66 games. Given his limited upside, acquiring him would not significantly enhance the Cardinals' roster. Instead, the 24-year-old Masyn Winn, with a .632 OPS, would be a more prudent choice for the starting shortstop position.

Trading for Volpe would not offer substantial value to the Cardinals, either offensively or defensively, and the team does not require a starting infielder in that role. The decision to pursue Volpe as a trade target would be a mistake for the Cardinals, who should focus on more productive upgrades to their roster.
