Bucheon festival brings comics to life with global cosplay, community fun

BUCHEON, Gyeonggi Province — The area surrounding the Korea Manhwa Museum in Bucheon transformed into a vibrant celebration of popular culture on Friday, as vivid comic panels came to life during the opening day of the 29th Bucheon International Comics Festival. Spanning three days and centered around the theme "Comics & Webtoons: Easy to Love, Endless to Enjoy," the annual event got underway with a diverse array of global cosplay contests, interactive community activities, and enthusiastic fans bringing their beloved characters to life.

Friday's opening showcased a wide range of experiences, attracting families, international attendees, and devoted pop culture aficionados. Inside the museum, local volunteers warmly welcomed young visitors to hands-on craft stations, assisting children in decorating commonplace items such as keyboards and hand mirrors with cartoon characters.

One volunteer expressed their enthusiasm for participating in the festival, stating that they joined as volunteers out of a shared passion as Bucheon residents to promote the city's signature cultural identity. Initially, the sight of numerous cosplayers felt somewhat unfamiliar, but as the day progressed, the passionate community's presence became increasingly engaging.
