Bucharest offers deeper defense and nuclear energy cooperation

Romanian President Nicușor Dan revealed during the Carpathian Eight summit on September 18 that Romania is prepared to strengthen defense cooperation with Ukraine, sharing its technology and expertise in nuclear energy. Romania boasts a rich history in the defense industry and possesses the production capacity and skilled workforce necessary for expansion, Dan noted.

However, he admitted that the sector failed to receive proper management over the past three decades. In light of this, Bucharest is ready to increase defense production given sufficient investment, he added, suggesting that collaboration with Ukraine and other nations in the Carpathian region could be part of this initiative. Defense cooperation was also discussed during private talks between Dan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy off the summit's agenda.

The two leaders explored projects leveraging the EU's SAFE defense financing instrument and joint drone production, according to the Ukrainian President's Office. Dan also emphasized Romania's nuclear energy capabilities, pointing out that the country has some 50 years of experience in the field and trained experts in nuclear technology and engineering.

Bucharest is open to engaging these specialists in cooperation with other Carpathian region countries, including through sharing nuclear technology and expertise. Romania currently manages the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, utilizing Canadian CANDU reactor technology, and aims to expand its nuclear power sector. Dan made these statements at the inaugural Carpathian Eight summit, a fresh regional cooperation format launched by Ukraine, which includes Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary, alongside EU representatives.
