Asian Games Open in Nagoya After Rocky Build-up

The 20th Asian Games officially commenced on Saturday at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya, Japan, marking the return to Japan after more than three decades. However, the preparations for this multi-sport event faced numerous hurdles, such as logistical and weather-related challenges. According to The Strait Times, athletes and officials were housed on cruise ships and wooden containers, raising concerns over living conditions.

Japanese officials chose not to construct a dedicated athletes village, opting for cost-saving measures.

Deputy Chairman of the Olympic Council of Asia athletes commission, Tayyab Ikram, highlighted the difficulties in discussions surrounding the accommodation issue, stating that alternatives had to be found. This decision was further complicated by severe weather in the region, with record rainfall earlier in the month and a potential typhoon threatening the Aichi-Nagoya coast.

Hundreds of athletes had to be evacuated last week due to the extreme rainfall, and the women's cricket opener between Bangladesh and China was canceled on Thursday because of the weather.

Despite these setbacks, the opening ceremony unfolded triumphantly at the 30,000-seat Paloma Mizuho Stadium. The ceremony featured a dance performance and a solo violin piece by Japanese musician Taro Hakase, emphasizing the theme of "Harmonic Heart Beat." Ohmura Hideaki, President of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and Asian Para Games Organizing Committee, praised the concept, expressing his hope that athletes would showcase their best abilities and inspire the dreams and aspirations of Asia's younger generation.

Ohura also encouraged participants and visitors to explore the region's historical sites, natural beauty, fermented foods, and traditional culture.

The Asian Games, this year, will see approximately 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and territories participate in 43 sports, running until October 4.
