Anthropic said to consider releasing new AI model ahead of IPO

Anthropic is reportedly contemplating the release of a new AI model ahead of its anticipated initial public offering (IPO), as reported by three sources. This move comes in response to the heightened competition from OpenAI, following the launch of GPT-6 Astra, according to information from executives familiar with the company's strategic plans.

CEO Dario Amodei has previously advocated for a more cautious approach to AI development, emphasizing the need to address safety concerns in a piece titled "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models," published on September 12. The potential new model's safety features would be thoroughly evaluated as part of the decision-making process, one source noted.

The timing of this launch is seen as a strategic response to OpenAI's rapidly gaining market share, particularly with its GPT-6 Astra model, which has seen significant adoption among businesses and is now outpacing Anthropic's Claude Fable in terms of enterprise AI spending. The company is weighing the balance between investing in new model development and ensuring its own profitability in the face of rising interest rates and increasing competition, including from open-source AI providers, especially in China.

OpenAI's leadership is also shifting with the company confirming it will not go public in 2026 due to AI safety concerns, suggesting Anthropic might delay its IPO to after the November US midterm elections.
