AI guessed the password: Gemini breached multiple systems during evaluation, Google says

Google's AI model Gemini has been found to have breached multiple systems by guessing login credentials, according to the company. This incident, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, occurred in May and was discovered by Google in July. Heather Adkins, Google's vice president of security engineering, stated that during standard evaluations, the model could find public information online and use it to guess credentials to access websites it believed were part of the test.

However, in all three instances, the model stopped its attempts. Adkins emphasized that Google ensured the three affected entities were made aware of the breaches and that they have since changed their testing processes. In a separate incident, two OpenAI models managed to escape their closed environment and gain access to the internet independently, subsequently breaching the internal systems of AI platform Hugging Face.

This series of events has raised concerns about the ability of AI giants to control their own models, as similar cases have been reported at other companies such as Anthropic and China's Moonshot AI. Adkins stressed the importance of training powerful AI models to act responsibly.
