Agency issues high flood risk alert for Lagos, Rivers, Imo, Kogi, 11 others

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued a high flood risk alert for 15 states, including Lagos, Rivers, Imo, and Kogi, from September 19 to 25. The alert, designated NFA-2026-262, is based on predictions of rising river levels and heightened flood risks in the specified regions. NiHSA Director-General and CEO Umar Mohammed disclosed the alert in a statement on Saturday, noting that nine river stations necessitate close monitoring.

Key locations identified in the assessment include Obubra, Itigidi, and Epento in Cross River State.

Mohammed emphasized the urgency for state governments, local councils, and emergency management authorities to implement precautionary measures. He urged residents in flood-prone areas to relocate essential items to higher ground. In Cross River, the assessment identified 2,471 communities, 703 schools, 344 health facilities, 145 markets, 453 religious centers, and 854 hectares of farmland within vulnerable exposure zones.

Mohammed requested communities to activate local early-warning systems and regularly check NiHSA's flood advisories. He advised against crossing flooded roads or bridges, even by foot or vehicle. Additionally, NiHSA urged the pre-positioning of relief materials, safe drinking water, and first-aid supplies, as well as the identification of safe shelters for temporary evacuations. Communities were advised to clear blocked drainage channels and avoid construction or living in flood-prone areas.

NiHSA committed to ongoing monitoring of hydrological conditions and river levels, issuing further updates as needed.
