2.6 million-plus MSMEs offer large scope for cleaner production, experts say

More than two and a half million micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Telangana present a significant opportunity for the implementation of energy-efficient and cleaner industrial technologies, according to experts participating in the 25th CII Energy Efficiency Summit 2026. These enterprises can benefit from technology adoption to boost productivity, cut operating expenses, enhance competitiveness and lower their environmental impact.

The Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a division under the Ministry of Power, has identified Telangana and the Hyderabad metropolitan area as key markets for promoting the adoption of globally recognized technologies among MSMEs. This initiative is particularly relevant for energy-intensive industries like textiles, spinning mills, power looms, printing, pharmaceuticals, granite cutting and slab polishing, where improved efficiency and production methods could lead to direct cost reductions.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is spearheading the ADEETIE programme to encourage energy-efficient technologies within the MSME sector. By adopting such technologies, MSMEs could lower operational and maintenance costs, enhance resource utilization, create employment opportunities and decrease greenhouse gas emissions, all while bolstering their resilience to climate change.

The summit convened policymakers, industry leaders and experts to explore strategies for scaling up energy-efficiency solutions tailored for MSMEs.
