Yemen conflict displaces 112,000 people inside country

The UN Refugee Agency reported that at least 112,000 individuals have been displaced within Yemen over the past two weeks due to ongoing conflict along the country's western coast. This follows a renewed struggle between the Iran-aligned Houthis and Saudi-led forces, who have intensified attacks on each other's territories.

In response to the escalating violence, nearly 3,000 refugees have fled by sea to Djibouti in the past week, according to Sandrine Desamours, a representative for the UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR. This influx is expected to pressure Djibouti's healthcare and education systems, as the government anticipates the arrival of up to 10,000 refugees.

The UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) noted that many of the refugees are families fleeing Yemen, often traveling on overcrowded boats with limited supplies of food and water. While the majority are Yemeni nationals, IOM has also observed a small number of migrants, primarily from Ethiopia.

Moreover, authorities in Somaliland and Puntland have reported increased arrivals of Yemeni refugees and Somali returnees, though these numbers remain in the hundreds. UNHCR emphasized that the current situation represents a crisis on top of multiple crises, as Yemen's healthcare services and economy have been severely affected by the protracted civil war between the internationally recognized Saudi-backed administration and the Houthis.
