With plenty of heart and horsepower, ‘Terbang’ flies high

"Terbang" is a sports drama inspired by the life of Karamjit Singh, a legendary Malaysian rally driver known as "The Flying Sikh". Set before Formula One took off, the film follows Ajeet (Irfan Zaini), a talented rally driver whose career takes a tragic turn. After returning home, he becomes a mechanic alongside his wife Lisa (Shweta Sekhon), a fellow racer.

When Lisa is diagnosed with cancer, Ajeet finds solace in his passion for racing once again. He joins the struggling Malaysian rally team PERT, managed by Rahim (Nam Ron), alongside the hot-headed co-driver Wai Kitt (Jack Tan). With their contrasting personalities, Ajeet and Wai face constant clashes, but they ultimately put aside their differences to represent their nation in an international rally tournament.

The film excels in creating relatable characters, and while some performances may feel a bit wooden, the cast delivers strong efforts. The well-executed rally sequences and car stunts add excitement to the film, making it suitable for racing enthusiasts and casual viewers alike. Despite some soap-opera elements and occasional melodrama, "Terbang" manages to balance its tone and deliver an uplifting message.

With a diverse cast and an unmistakably Malaysian spirit, the film is a fitting watch for Malaysia Day, crossing the finish line in style.
