White House withdraws Trump’s ICE nominee as Republican senator objects

President Donald Trump's nominee to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Richard Schroyer, has been withdrawn following objections from a Republican senator. Schroyer, previously a senior aide to the Secretary of Homeland Security, was nominated in June. The White House cited lack of information regarding ICE and Border Patrol shootings that resulted in American deaths in Minneapolis in January.

Republican Senator Rand Paul had prevented the confirmation, demanding more details. Schroyer, a 29-year veteran of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and a former US Marine, had been selected by Trump despite his limited experience in managing a large law enforcement agency. The position, among others, needs Senate confirmation. This withdrawal represents a setback for Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, as ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed leader since 2017.

The current leader, David Venturella, is a former private prison executive. The move comes as Trump's pledge to enforce strict immigration laws, a key campaign promise, is causing internal party divisions as the midterm elections approach.
