Washburn coach Brett Ballard provides crash update

Washburn University head basketball coach Brett Ballard shared an update about his recovery from a crash that occurred on August 4. According to Ballard, a neurological episode was the cause of the accident, which seriously injured him. In a video posted on September 18, he expressed that he is progressing well and believes he will make a full recovery within a couple of months.

Ballard's medical condition, which includes sudden temporary events caused by abnormal brain or nerve activity, was not detailed further. The coach, who is in his ninth season at Washburn, expressed gratitude to his physicians, his wife Kelly, and everyone who provided support during this challenging time. He also encouraged his team and fans to support him as he faces adversity, both on and off the court.

The crash took place in Topeka, Kansas, when Ballard's 2024 Ford F-150 drifted off the roadway, struck a delineator post, went airborne, and landed in the grass before striking a bridge pillar. Ballard was unconscious at the scene and required assistance to be extricated from the vehicle. No tickets were issued, and alcohol was not involved in the incident.
