Violence is South Africa’s unofficial 13th language

South Africa harbors an unofficial 13th language, one that permeates daily life and suppresses society through its overwhelming brutality. Kenneth Diole, co-founder of YT Consulting Africa, highlights the ubiquity of this harsh language, which is spoken fluently in homes, schools, and streets. This language dictates intimate relationships, parental discipline, teacher-student interactions, and male-female coexistence.

It has desensitized society, leaving us oblivious to its white noise until a crisis forces us to acknowledge its deadly impact. The latest crime statistics reveal 5,427 murders in the first quarter, with six women killed daily and 1,052 surviving attempted murders. Sexual violence is even more alarming, with 8,814 out of 9,201 reported rape cases affecting women and children.

The normalization of violence has led to heightened security measures in daily spaces, such as post offices, public parks, and running routes. A decay of moral and social values has exacerbated this crisis, with young people exhibiting violent behavior both in public and within their homes. The leadership responsible for women, youth, and persons with disabilities must act urgently to provide resources for security, fund prevention workshops, and enforce policies.

Men must recognize their role in perpetuating violence and initiate conversations about collective responsibility. Challenging toxic gender norms, educating society on non-physical abuse manifestations, and fostering moral accountability in civic and religious organizations are crucial steps. Grassroots intervention, particularly in schools, is essential to combat the normalization of violence.

This crisis cannot be addressed through empty solidarity or performative actions; it demands active, widespread engagement to create safer spaces for women and prevent the nation's failure.
