[UPDATED] Najib's lawyers await instructions over house arrest

Datuk Seri Najib Razak's legal team is waiting for instructions regarding the former prime minister's conditional house arrest. His lawyer, Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, stated that the team is cautious about commenting prematurely to avoid providing inaccurate information. Farhan added that Shafee & Co would issue a statement if a response is warranted.

Earlier, the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced that Najib has been granted house arrest for the remainder of his sentence, contingent upon his payment of the RM50 million fine from his SRC International conviction. The board mandated that Najib must adhere to all imposed conditions to serve the rest of his prison sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028.

Currently 73 years old, Najib has been incarcerated at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, after the Federal Court upheld his conviction in the SRC International corruption case. He was initially convicted of seven charges, including abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering involving RM42 million of SRC International's funds.

Subsequent to the conviction, both his sentence and fine were reduced by the Pardons Board. The board had recently postponed Najib's pardon application during a session chaired by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia.
