[UPDATED] Anwar, PH leaders must explain Najib house arrest, says Rafizi

Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has called upon Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and senior Pakatan Harapan leaders to shed light on the conditional house arrest of former Prime Minister Najib Razak. Rafizi emphasized the duty of Anwar and PH leaders from PKR, DAP, and Amanah to provide proper explanations to the public, rather than attributing the matter to uncontrollable circumstances.

While Anwar profited from the 1MDB issue through speeches and parliamentary contributions, he did not match the level of scrutiny ordinary Malaysians applied to the scandal. Between 2015 and 2018, Anwar was imprisoned during the height of the 1MDB crisis. Rafizi stated that the responsibility to safeguard people's rights regarding 1MDB lay with ordinary Malaysians, such as civil servants, media personnel, and activists, many of whom remained unnamed.

The 1MDB scandal had even influenced some Malaysians who had not previously voted for PH to support the coalition during the 2018 general election. Rafizi urged Anwar and the PH leadership to explain the house arrest conditions for Najib, at least to appease those disappointed by the decision. He also suggested that Anwar should disclose the precise conditions of Najib's house arrest to enable action against any clear violations.

Rafizi appealed to Malaysians concerned about the misuse of 1MDB funds to act as society's watchful eyes, ensuring the house arrest adheres to imposed conditions. He urged Malaysians with a deep concern for the 1MDB abuse to realize that preserving people's trust is a continuous responsibility that should never cease. Rafizi emphasized the importance of educating the younger generation about the 1MDB scandal and the significance of ongoing efforts to build integrity into the nation's governance.

He wished for Najib, his family, and supporters to comprehend the enduring impact of the 1MDB fallout on many Malaysians. While accepting the decision, Rafizi hoped that the house arrest process would be conducted discreetly to avoid further controversy.
