Tinubu orders probe, prosecution of officials over deaths of 37 miners in NSCDC custody

Former Vice President and presidential candidate for 2027, Atiku Abubakar, has called for accountability following the deaths of 40 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. In a statement shared on X, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the loss of these individuals, emphasizing their right to protection and dignity while in government custody. He was disappointed by the fact that, despite allegations against them, they were not afforded this basic right.

Atiku commended the Federal Government for suspending the NSCDC commandant in Niger State, Suberu Aniviye, and ordering a thorough investigation into the tragic deaths. He urged that the investigation be independent, comprehensive, and transparent, with its findings made public. Atiku firmly stated that anyone found responsible for the deaths, whether through negligence, abuse, or misconduct, must face accountability.

The families of the deceased, he said, deserved more than just condolences. They needed the truth and justice, and Nigerians required reassurance that the state's custody would no longer equate to a death sentence. He expressed empathy towards the bereaved families and implored for the circumstances surrounding their loved ones' deaths to be determined promptly.

The suspected illegal miners were apprehended during enforcement operations in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas of Niger State on September 15 and 16. The NSCDC reported that some of the detained suspects were found dead early Thursday morning, leading to a suspected disease outbreak. The bodies were subsequently sent to General Hospital, Minna, for further medical examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, confirmed that 37 suspected illegal miners had died in NSCDC custody, and forensic, medical, and autopsy examinations were underway to ascertain the cause of the deaths. The Federal Government has suspended Aniviye and initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances leading to the deaths.

The NSCDC has also formed an investigative team to scrutinize the arrested suspects' arrest conditions, detention period, medical care, and the environment in which they were held. The cause of the deaths remains unverified, with rumors of overcrowding and poor ventilation circulating, but authorities assert that investigations and medical examinations are necessary to reach conclusions.
