Three dead in Philippines school shooting, including gunman

A school shooting on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Friday claimed the lives of three pupils, including the 16-year-old suspected gunman who ultimately took his own life. Eight individuals sustained injuries, with four in critical condition. The victims were all students aged between 14 and 17, according to Albert Palencia, mayor of Banga town in South Cotabato, the location of the incident.

The suspect reportedly sat next to his friends and instructed them to leave, stating that after lunch, he would carry out his plan. His companions found his remark amusing, as the shooter was known for his playful nature. After lunch, he commenced his assault on the students, striking ten before ultimately ending his own life.

South Cotabato governor Reynaldo Tamayo called on parents to ensure firearms are stored securely and out of reach of their children. He emphasized the responsibility of gun owners to prevent minors from accessing them. Tamayo acknowledged the limitations of relying solely on security personnel to monitor large numbers of students, stressing the need for collective effort to prevent such tragedies.

In a similar incident last month, a student live-streamed the killing of another student in a classroom in Zamboanga City before taking his own life. In June, three pupils were killed and twenty injured in an attack at a public high school in Tacloban, where two classmates opened fire on campus. Despite stringent gun ownership regulations in the Philippines, including background checks and psychological evaluations, illegal firearms continue to circulate.
