Thane Political Banners Row: Residents Raise Concerns Over Unauthorized Hoardings During Festive Season

Thane, September 18: Despite the festive season of Ganeshotsav concluding, unauthorized political banners remain in high demand, cluttering key intersections and roads throughout the city. While politicians vie for attention-grabbing publicity, residents are increasingly frustrated by the apparent lack of enforcement against political figures, who are exempt from civic rules that ordinary citizens must follow.

The season of festivals, which includes Ganeshotsav, Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali, has become synonymous with a surge in publicity hoardings, which often morph into aggressive political campaigning. Major public squares and main roads have transformed into advertising zones, significantly diminishing the city's aesthetic and visual charm.

Despite regular removal drives, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) admits that banners reappear at the same locations within days, with no discernible improvement in the situation. These unanchored structures not only mar the visual appeal of the city but also pose significant safety hazards. They obstruct drivers' sightlines at critical junctions and risk collapsing during heavy winds or storms, posing a threat to commuters.

Residents and environmental advocates are calling for stricter action, demanding that the administration impose direct financial penalties on the organizers, vendors, and political figures featured on the displays. The Chief Minister’s Secretariat has acknowledged the issue and has directed the matter to the Urban Development Department for administrative action.

All eyes are now on the TMC to enforce long-term compliance and ensure that political sponsors are held individually accountable. Until such measures are taken, public infrastructure will continue to be compromised for personal publicity, undermining the city's efforts toward cleanliness and aesthetic appeal.
