Speakers to Seek Governors’ Input Before Decision on State Police, Declares Guwor

Warri's Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, declared yesterday that state Houses of Assembly would consult governors before making a final decision on the proposed State Police Bill. Guwor made this declaration while reacting to the announcement by the Clerk to the National Assembly that the relevant constitution review bills, including the State Police Bill, had been forwarded to state legislatures.

The Speaker's Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, confirmed Guwor's remarks, stating that the speakers had acknowledged the development but were still awaiting formal copies of the resolutions. Upon receiving them, the speakers would conduct thorough legislative scrutiny of the bills, he added.

Guwor emphasized the need for careful consideration of the proposed State Police Bill due to its potential impact on governance at the state level. He highlighted that the proposed interaction with the Nigeria Governors' Forum was crucial, as both governors and state lawmakers have constitutional responsibilities in the constitutional amendment process.

According to Guwor, all speakers would remain informed throughout the process, and the resolutions of the state legislatures would be transmitted to the National Assembly in accordance with Section 9 of the amended 1999 Constitution.
