Shots fired as migrants moved to new camp in Ceuta

On Friday, police in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta fired shots to move crowds of migrants from the beaches to a new camp located one kilometer away. This incident occurred six weeks after approximately 80,000 individuals illegally entered Ceuta from Morocco, drawing international attention and criticism for the country's perceived lax border controls.

Currently, between 5,000 and 10,000 migrants remain in Ceuta, which has a population of just 83,000 people, putting significant strain on the city. Authorities received permission from the National Court on Thursday to open a temporary camp in an industrial area of Ceuta's Port, capable of housing up to 1,500 adults. Around 150 officers participated in an operation on Friday to relocate the migrants, which led to a chaotic scene.

The Spanish Interior Ministry reported that police opened fire, injuring several individuals. The surge in migrants over the summer has put Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in a difficult position, as he is accused of jeopardizing European security by creating a backdoor to the continent. Sanchez has denied receiving any warning about the massive influx of migrants over a single weekend, stating that no competent agency anticipated the crisis.

The release of 40 documents and conversations has intensified scrutiny of Sanchez's handling of the situation, raising questions about his accountability and competence. Opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo of the right-wing People's Party criticized the Spanish government for its perceived incompetence and urged Europe to address the failure of the Spanish government to adequately defend its border.
