Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid explores project tracing cultural history of Al Khuzam

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, has launched a significant research project to explore the cultural history of Al Khuzam. This ancient Emirati craft, deeply rooted in the region's heritage, has now become a symbol of national identity. Sheikh Mohammed reviewed the project alongside other key figures including Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Mohammed Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs.

The project traces Al Khuzam's evolution across three key stages. Initially, it was used for guiding camels and navigating the desert. Later, it became a common item of attire and lifestyle. Today, it represents Emirati identity. The research is based on historical records from the Arab world, including mentions of Al Khuzam in Arabic poetry which associated it with camels, travel, leadership, and resilience.

The project will document traditional crafting methods. This includes collecting wool, spinning it into threads, braiding into rope, and adding knots, rings, and silver chains to create functional yet aesthetically pleasing items. Mohammed bin Rashid, alongside Hamdan bin Mohammed and Ahmed bin Mohammed, was present during the project's unveiling.

The project goes beyond merely preserving Al Khuzam as a physical object. It delves into its broader cultural significance, recognizing how its meaning has evolved over time. The team also emphasizes the importance of passing on these skills to younger generations. Al Khuzam's visual language, featuring distinctive rings, threads, and details, also inspires modern design.

Emirati entrepreneurs and designers have already leveraged Al Khuzam's symbolism to create unique collections. This not only preserves the craft but also expands its relevance in the global market. The ultimate goal of the project is to empower artisans, designers, and entrepreneurs to enhance Al Khuzam's presence in contemporary society, all while maintaining its deep connection with Emirati heritage.
