Several options being considered by government to cushion consumers against fuel price hikes – NPA Boss

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Chief Executive Officer, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has revealed that the government is exploring multiple options to protect consumers from the escalating prices of fuel. Speaking on PM EXPRESS BUSINESS EDITION, Tameklo stated that his sector minister, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, is reviewing various scenarios to take the necessary measures.

Tameklo, however, declined to provide specific details, emphasizing that the government's primary focus is on safeguarding consumers and Ghanaians. He also noted that the government has already stepped in to mitigate the impact of the rising international petroleum prices, preventing the full effect from being transferred to consumers.

Diesel prices at fuel stations could have reached up to GH¢28 per litre without government intervention. The government has committed over GH¢1 billion to cushion consumers from the impact of rising fuel prices. Earlier this year, the government rolled out measures to shield petroleum product consumers from international market price increases, initially covering both petrol and diesel, but later concentrating on diesel due to its economic implications.

President John Dramani Mahama directed the NPA to absorb GH¢2 per litre of diesel to alleviate the burden of rising fuel costs on Ghanaians, particularly commercial transport operators and businesses reliant on diesel. The government has extended this policy for September 2026, with additional potential permanent actions expected in the next year's budget presented by the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson in November 2026.
