SEMICON India 2026: 25 MoUs signal India's chip ecosystem push

SEMICON India 2026, held from September 17 to 19 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, marked a significant step in India's push to strengthen its chipmaking ecosystem. The event saw the government announce investments of nearly Rs 1 lakh crore and create around a lakh jobs, signaling a shift from policy commitments to practical implementation.

Tata Electronics led the charge, signing agreements with global companies such as Nexperia, INOX Air Products, and Sumitomo Chemical to establish domestic capacity for gases, chemicals, and packaging at its fabs in Dholera and Jagiroad. By the event's conclusion, 25 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and announcements had been made, involving private entities, research institutions, skill development bodies, and government departments.

Highlights included Tata Electronics' partnerships with INOX Air Products for high purity gases, Sumitomo Chemical for chemicals, and Kelington Engineering for gas distribution systems. Additionally, collaborations were forged for advanced packaging, power modules, IoT modules, and semiconductor workforce development, reflecting India's growing capability to transition from semiconductor assembly to a comprehensive domestic ecosystem.
