Sean McVay’s Australia Gripe Highlights NFL’s Business-Football Divide

The NFL's international expansion continues to create internal conflicts, with Rams head coach Sean McVay expressing his hope that the team never plays another game in Australia. McVay cited the logistical burden of extensive travel to the country as a factor in his decision. Despite the team's territorial rights in Australia, along with China and Mexico, which are part of the NFL's Global Markets Program, McVay believes the negative experience in Melbourne, where the Rams were heavily defeated by the 49ers, has convinced him that future visits to Australia are unnecessary.

He likened the situation to the "Men in Black" film scenario, stating that he hopes the memory of the game is lost to time. McVay emphasized that the team's focus is on maintaining their normal routine as much as possible, which is difficult to achieve when traveling internationally. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, on the other hand, remains optimistic about the potential for permanent teams in Europe.

He has previously hinted at the possibility of international franchises, citing easier scheduling and increased fan support as reasons why Europe might be the ideal location. Despite the challenges posed by international games, such as disrupted daily routines for players, Goodell believes that the support for expanding the NFL's global reach is strong.
