Rory McIlroy confesses “love” for Middle East ahead of DP World Tour

Dubai: Rory McIlroy is eagerly anticipating his return to the UAE later this year, expressing full confidence in the local authorities to ensure the safety of the DP World Tour's season-ending events. The four-time major winner began his BMW PGA Championship campaign with a score of 69 at Wentworth on Thursday, as the DP World Tour enters its decisive stage.

The season will conclude with two events in the Middle East – the Abu Dhabi Championship and the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. Despite the region's recent conflicts, McIlroy has no qualms about traveling, placing trust in the local authorities and event organizers. McIlroy's success in the UAE has been pivotal to his DP World Tour career, winning his seventh Race to Dubai title in 2025.

"If the local governments believe it's safe to host these events, they won't risk their citizens or visitors," McIlroy stated. "I have a deep love for the Middle East; I have many friends there, and I'm excited to return." This trip coincides with a major prize opportunity as McIlroy aims to secure a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title.

Even though he finds himself trailing the leaderboard, the Northern Irish golfer believes his game is showing promising signs. Currently participating in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club in England, McIlroy hit a 60 during the Wednesday's BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am before starting his tournament with a three-under-par 69.

"I wish it was on a Thursday and not a Wednesday," McIlroy quipped about his Pro-Am round. "But yeah, I played well. When you perform like that, in practice or a competitive round, you should take some confidence from it. I saw a few putts go in and felt better with the putter than last week."
