Rick Bowness 'not happy' with two Columbus Blue Jackets for fitness

On the first day of training camp, the Columbus Blue Jackets experienced mixed results. According to coach Rick Bowness, most players were in good physical condition, but two unnamed players failed to meet the conditioning standards set during season-ending exit interviews in April. Bowness expressed dissatisfaction with these players, stating they are currently protected by the NHL's three-hour rule.

This rule, part of the new collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players' Association, mandates that players limit their on-ice work to no more than three hours per day during the first four days of training camp. The rule does not apply on days when teams have scheduled exhibition games.

Bowness did not provide further details about the two players but clarified his disappointment stemmed from the end-of-season 1-on-1 meetings with the players. He emphasized the importance of these meetings, stating that both parties must be clear on expectations. The physical conditioning aspect has gained even more significance with the NHL increasing the number of games from 82 to 84.

The NHLPA negotiated a shorter preseason to compensate, resulting in a two-week training period for players. While the disappointment with the two players is noticeable, Bowness remains composed, stating that it is not at the level of his reaction after last season's loss to the Washington Capitals. He remains focused on correcting the issue, saying, "You know what, it's not that bad, but it's not where I want it to be. So, we'll fix it."
