Sutskever, who previously led research that contributed to the rise of reasoning models, spoke about the rapid pace of AI development since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022.

He emphasized that many experts believe today's neural network-based technology has the potential to eventually outperform human intelligence.

While acknowledging the significant challenges that lie ahead in envisioning a future where AI handles all human work, Sutskever urged society to prepare for this eventual reality. He also raised concerns about the possibility of a hypothetical superintelligent AI that may not be forthcoming about its intentions, which could pose an existential threat to humanity.

The concept of a superintelligent AI has been a topic of discussion among scientists for many years. In 1965, British mathematician IJ Good proposed the idea of an "ultraintelligent machine" that would surpass human intelligence in virtually every domain. Since then, numerous researchers have agreed that the progression of AI will eventually lead to the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI), a highly capable system that can outperform humans across multiple tasks.

AGI, in turn, is thought to be a stepping stone towards the emergence of artificial superintelligence (ASI), a level of intelligence far surpassing human abilities.
