‘PIL not for settling personal scores’: Orissa High Court slaps Rs 50,000 fine on petitioner

KUALA LUMPUR - The High Court has rejected businessman Albert Tei's attempt to transfer his corruption charges to a higher court. Tei, whose real name is Tei Jiann Cheing, had been facing five charges related to former senior political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin. The businessman sought to transfer the case to the High Court, arguing that the charges raised constitutional issues under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

However, High Court judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin dismissed the application, stating that the issues were not complex. Tei faces charges of giving RM140,000 in cash and furniture, totaling RM14,580.03 and RM22,249, to Shamsul Iskandar as an inducement for securing mineral exploration licenses in Sabah. The alleged offenses took place between November 24, 2023, and March 5, 2024.
