OPINION: Protecting the institution that safeguards our democracy

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is a pivotal institution that has been overseeing elections since 1994, ensuring the integrity of the democratic process. In the current political climate, characterized by political contestation, misinformation, and rapidly changing information landscapes, the IEC's role becomes even more crucial. The confidence in the electoral process is directly linked to the trust placed in the IEC, making it essential that this institution is held to account and remains open to scrutiny.

Since its inception, the IEC has consistently administered elections, enabling millions of South Africans to exercise their democratic right to choose their representatives. With the upcoming Local Government Elections on 04 November 2026, the IEC is preparing to deploy thousands of vetted and trained officials to ensure a smooth election day. Additionally, the Electoral Act permits political parties and candidates to have representatives at voting stations to monitor voting procedures and the counting process.

To counter the challenges posed by disinformation, the IEC has implemented the Electoral Code of Conduct Countering Disinformation in the Local Government Elections. This code emphasizes the importance of verifying information before sharing it, retracting and correcting false or misleading content within 36 hours, and censuring those responsible for such misinformation.

Furthermore, the code prohibits disinformation targeting the Electoral Commission or its staff, requiring swift public correction when such instances occur.

The IEC encourages citizens to report suspected disinformation through the digital disinformation reporting and tracking platform, Real411. This platform is accessible to anyone, including members of society, political parties, candidates, and organizations, ensuring that everyone can contribute to safeguarding the institutions that uphold our democracy.

As the nation prepares for the upcoming elections, it is crucial that the IEC continues to demonstrate its commitment to upholding democratic values, remaining open to scrutiny, and holding itself accountable to the people it serves.
