'Of course I am worried': Live Science readers react to US weapons in space

Live Science readers have reacted with concern to the recent announcement that the United States has deployed space control weapons capable of defending against hostile adversary action. U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink revealed the deployment during a conference in Maryland. Experts are worried that this development may push outer space into the realm of an arms race, despite the 1967 Outer Space Treaty which prohibits weapons from being placed in orbit.

However, the treaty lacks an enforcement mechanism, potentially leading to other countries following suit.

In a poll conducted by Live Science, 80% of the 280 readers expressed worry that space will become a new frontier for weapons. One reader stated, "Of course I am worried that the US have put weapons in space," adding that they are concerned by the administration's actions. Another commenter opined, "Peace in space depends on the calibre and wisdom of world leaders which currently is simply not up to the necessary standard to be unlegislated."

The next largest group of readers, 14%, chose the option "This is a bit premature, and I'm waiting to see how other countries will react." One reader suggested that the presence of weapons in space does not necessarily mean they are intended to escalate a major conflict, referencing the saying, "If you want peace, prepare for war." They noted that while there is no suggestion these weapons were put there to start a war, having defensive measures in place would be beneficial if a conflict arises in the future.
