No sign of Najib leaving Kajang Prison as of 3.30pm

As of 3.30pm today, former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has not been seen leaving Kajang Prison. He was granted a conditional pardon by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, enabling him to serve the remaining portion of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028. Over 20 media personnel continued to wait outside the prison entrance, eagerly awaiting any updates.

The atmosphere remained tranquil and under control. Prisons Department staff arrived at the prison premises as early as 8am to follow any developments, while only regular movements involving logistics and administrative vehicles were observed. No gatherings of Najib's supporters were noted at the location. Prison officers were positioned at the main entrance to keep an eye on the situation.

The Prisons Department had promised to release another statement regarding Najib's conditional pardon later in the day. Earlier in the day, the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced that Najib had received a conditional pardon, allowing him to complete his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028. The fine imposed in the SRC International case was reduced to RM50 million from the original RM210 million.

Najib, 73, is currently incarcerated at Kajang Prison after serving a reduced six-year sentence for his conviction in the SRC International case, where he was found guilty of seven charges related to abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering involving RM42 million belonging to the now-defunct 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million by the Federal Court in February 2024, but the Pardons Board subsequently reduced his sentence and fine.
