Nike launches Alphafly 4 for marathon runners

The Nike Alphafly 4 is the latest carbon-plate running shoe from Nike, launched today and aimed at being better than its predecessors and the best rivals on the market. Nike's Vice President of Running Footwear, Bret Schoolmeester, shared details on the shoe's development, emphasizing the importance of stability in the design.

Schoolmeester revealed that Nike drew inspiration from its roster of elite athletes and research teams to create the Alphafly 4's aims. One of the unique focuses of the Alphafly 4 is stability, which is crucial for long-distance events, as biomechanics can break down late in the race. Improved stability helps runners maintain critical velocity throughout the event, making the shoe more efficient.

The Alphafly 4 boasts several key updates, including a new foam called ZoomX LT that offers 17% weight reduction while improving energy return by 8%, radiofrequency welding for the Air Zoom pods to reduce weight by 30%, and a redesigned plate geometry that enhances stability and deflection of the foam and airbags. The shoe also uses a combination of ZoomX and lighter foam in its midsole, optimizing both performance and stability.

Stability is particularly important in a marathon racing shoe as it can help runners maintain proper biomechanics and energy return even when fatigued, ultimately leading to faster times and more consistent performance throughout the race. The Alphafly 4 is priced at $275/£254 and will be available as a limited release starting September 17th.
