New Zealand Dollar falls as hawkish Fed stance supports US Dollar

NZD/USD trades lower around 0.5710 on Friday at the time of writing, down 0.34% on the day.

New Zealand Dollar falls as hawkish Fed stance supports US Dollar

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) experienced a decline against the US Dollar (USD) as the Federal Reserve's (Fed) Chair Kevin Warsh adopted a hawkish stance, bolstering the US Dollar's strength. Warsh's comments emphasized that inflation remained persistently high, and economic data from the summer did not indicate substantial structural improvements.

Consequently, investors anticipated tighter monetary policy, which further supported the USD and negatively impacted the NZD. The CME FedWatch tool indicated that markets now consider a 53.1% probability of a Fed rate hike at the October meeting, up from 44% the previous day. This shift in expectations for the US interest rate outlook favored the US Dollar, prompting investors to factor in the likelihood of sustained restrictive monetary conditions.

On the New Zealand side, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) maintained a 60% chance of raising its policy rate to 3% at its upcoming October meeting. However, New Zealand's trade data showed a mixed picture. The trade deficit narrowed to NZ$1.35 billion in August from NZ$2.12 billion in July but remained higher than the market consensus of NZ$1.275 billion.

While exports increased by 15.4% year-on-year to NZ$6.66 billion, imports rose by 13.1% to NZ$8 billion. Despite this improvement, the US Dollar's strength currently dominated NZD/USD price action. Technical analysis indicated that NZD/USD traded at 0.5712, showing a bearish short-term bias as it remained below both the 100-period simple moving average (SMA) of 0.5746 and the 200-period SMA of 0.5789.

The pair was also capped by the downward resistance trend line at 0.5752. The RSI was around 37, indicating weak downside momentum. Support appeared at 0.5703, with a deeper floor at 0.5670, and a sustained move below these levels could perpetuate the current bearish phase.
