New-generation MyKad drops Touch ’n Go feature, focuses on security, says NRD

KUALA LUMPUR, September 18 — The new-generation MyKad, which began being issued yesterday, has discontinued the Touch ’n Go feature. According to the National Registration Department (NRD), users can still utilize the service via the Touch ’n Go eWallet or a standalone Touch ’n Go card. The post on social media stated, "For individuals who wish to continue using Touch ’n Go services, the facility can be accessed through the Touch ’n Go eWallet or a separate Touch ’n Go card."

The NRD emphasized that the new-generation MyKad is centered on its primary role as the official identity document while incorporating upgraded security and technological characteristics. The 53 security features integrated into the new MyKad include a Dynamic Security Hologram, a transparent window on the front, an Enforcement QR Code, and a Dual-Function Interface Chip on the back.

These enhancements aim to bolster identity verification, deter forgery, and minimize misuse of personal documents. With the transparent window, the risk of fake identification is further mitigated. The QR code facilitates verification and compliance procedures. The Dynamic Security Hologram exhibits a three-dimensional image that alters with the angle of view and illumination.

Additionally, the UV feature highlights unique security elements discernible only under ultraviolet light. Guilloche patterns and microtext are additional security measures, while the polycarbonate layer augments the card’s resistance to heat and chemicals, thereby increasing its longevity. Applications for the new MyKad can be processed at 40 NRD branches equipped with printing capabilities, with the cards issued on the same day.

For NRD branches lacking printing facilities, the new-generation MyKad applications can still be submitted, and the cards will be prepared within five working days.
