Nairobi Expressway Announces Westlands Traffic Diversion From Saturday

Motorists are instructed to use the lower A8 road, specifically Waiyaki Way, to access the Nairobi Expressway's Westlands entrance during planned maintenance and construction works on the elevated overpass. This temporary traffic diversion will commence at 8pm on Saturday and continue until noon on Monday, September 21. According to Moja Expressway Company, motorists traveling towards the Central Business District (CBD) will be prohibited from using the elevated overpass deck to reach the Westlands entrance.

Instead, they will be guided through the affected area by traffic marshals using the lower A8 road. Outbound traffic exiting the Expressway towards the overpass will resume normal operations at 5pm on Saturday. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and adhere to instructions from traffic marshals to minimize disruptions during the works.

The company extends its apologies for the inconvenience caused by the temporary diversion and thanks motorists for using the Nairobi Expressway. This measure follows a rise in traffic volumes on the Nairobi Expressway, which continues to grow as demand for the key transport corridor increases. Government data reveals that the expressway averaged 67,298 vehicles daily during the 2024/25 financial year, compared to around 59,000 vehicles two years prior.

Traffic volumes have surged since the expressway's inception, with approximately 11,000 vehicles per day at the start and about 12.5 million vehicles in the first half of the current financial year alone.
