Miss Universe row: Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Singapore contestants declared ineligible for 2026 pageant, Thailand franchise hits back

Bangkok, September 18 — Six countries—Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, and Singapore—are facing potential exclusion from the upcoming Miss Universe 2026 pageant due to a dispute over licensing rights. A document issued by the Miss Universe organization asserts that JKN Universe LLC does not recognize the franchise agreements for these six countries, rendering contestants ineligible for the 75th Miss Universe competition.

The six countries' respective franchises are valid for 2026, but JKN Universe LLC asserts that these franchise arrangements were based on agreements it does not deem legally valid. The organization claims that Khaosod English reported that Miss Universe Eastern Pte Ltd, which is not authorized to grant, transfer, or sublicense rights to operate under the Miss Universe brand, played a role in invalidating the arrangements.

JKN Universe LLC maintains that it is the authority responsible for granting or approving rights connected to the Miss Universe brand, and that any agreements made outside its framework do not create valid rights to use the brand. The dispute highlights a conflict over the validity of national franchise arrangements, and JKN Universe LLC has threatened civil or criminal action against those making false or misleading statements regarding its financial position.

Miss Universe Thailand, operated by Miss Grand International PCL, has rejected JKN Universe LLC's position, asserting its own rights as a rights holder and/or authorized operator of Miss Universe licences for the affected countries. The dispute remains unresolved as the 75th Miss Universe pageant approaches.
