Mirra Andreeva now has a major advantage over Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula she must utilise this year

Mirra Andreeva has a significant chance to outperform Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula during the remaining months of the 2026 season. The 19-year-old Russian tennis player clinched her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in June, but has not added to her major titles since. Despite beating Gauff in the US Open quarter-finals with two match points, Andreeva now has the potential to surpass both Gauff and Pegula and reach a career-high ranking.

After the US Open, Andreeva maintained her position as the world number five, a career-high ranking. However, she trails Gauff by 1,501 points and current world number three Jessica Pegula by 1,440 points. Notably, Andreeva has only 131 points to defend until 2027, a much smaller number compared to the points Pegula (1,440 points) and Gauff (1,590 points) must defend.

With the opportunity to compete in the WTA Finals, Andreeva is practically assured of her first appearance. This extra tournament will provide Andreeva with more opportunities to gain ranking points and potentially overtake Gauff and Pegula. Moreover, by overtaking either Gauff or Pegula, Andreeva could secure a top four seed for the Australian Open next year.

This would be advantageous as Andreeva has unfavorable head-to-head results against both Aryna Sabalenka and Gauff, and is equal against world number one Elena Rybakina. Andreeva will begin her push towards this goal at the Singapore Open, China Open, and Wuhan Open, before potentially making her WTA Finals debut in Indian Wells.
