Man who assaulted US lawmaker Ilhan Omar sentenced to 14 months in prison

Anthony James Kazmierczak, a Minnesota man, was sentenced to 14 months in prison on Thursday for assaulting Democratic US Representative Ilhan Omar, according to prosecutors. The sentencing followed Kazmierczak's guilty plea in May, admitting to his attack on the federal official due to their differing political views. The incident occurred in January during a town hall speech by Omar, where Kazmierczak squirted her with vinegar from a syringe.

The attack was captured on video and widely shared online. In the video, Kazmierczak can be heard urging Omar to resign. Security guards quickly subdued Kazmierczak, allowing Omar to continue her remarks. Minnesota US Attorney Daniel Rosen, a Trump appointee, had previously condemned the attack, deeming it part of a concerning trend of political hatred escalating into criminal actions. Rosen's office did not provide further comment after the sentencing.
