Mamata Banerjee's New Party Identity And 'Football Player' Symbol Hand Her A Subtle Brand Messaging

The Election Commission recently stepped in to resolve internal conflicts within the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) ahead of crucial legislative by-elections scheduled for October 6 in West Bengal and Assam. The commission granted each faction distinct, temporary political identities to maintain fairness until a final decision is made.

Mamata Banerjee, the founder of the party, now goes by "Mamata All India Trinamool Congress," with a "football player" symbol. This choice capitalizes on West Bengal's deep love for football and Banerjee's personal brand as "Didi," which transcends traditional party structures. In contrast, the rebel faction led by Arup Roy and Ritabrata Banerjee will be known as "Democratic Trinamool Congress," with an "envelope" symbol.

The latter symbol lacks emotional or cultural resonance with the electorate, potentially confusing voters at the polling booth.

The "football player" symbol is favored because it embodies dynamic action, competitiveness, and regional pride in Bengal. Football is integral to regional identity and Banerjee's campaign slogan "Khela Hobe" (The game is on), which resonates with voters. Conversely, the "envelope" symbol conveys a passive, bureaucratic image, making it less appealing for mobilizing supporters.

This strategic naming and symbol choice ensures that Banerjee's faction maintains a distinct, emotionally engaging political identity in the upcoming elections.
