Malaysia Airlines closing in on order for Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Malaysia Airlines is reportedly close to placing an order for ten Boeing 787 Dreamliners, as the carrier aims to replace its aging fleet with modern aircraft, according to sources familiar with the matter. The new planes would replace seven of the airline's leased Airbus A350 jets, while also leaving room for future growth.

Boeing secured the deal by offering earlier delivery slots starting in 2031, and GE Aviation provided better engine terms compared to Rolls-Royce Holdings. The airline has been seeking to replace its seven leased A350s due to high lease rentals. Malaysia Airlines evaluated planes from both Boeing and Airbus before making its decision.

The announcement of the order carries political significance, as U.S. President Donald Trump has linked Boeing orders to trade agreements with various countries. In 2020, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim signed a deal with the United States to purchase 30 Boeing aircraft, with the option for 30 more.

Malaysia Airlines has relied on Airbus for its widebody planes since 2016, using older A330s and newer A350s. The company replaced its oldest jets by ordering 40 A330neos in recent years, with 10 already delivered. Currently, Malaysia Airlines operates a fleet of around 90 aircraft, including 57 Boeing 737 single-aisle jets.
