KRA intercepts smuggled goods worth Ksh46.7M in transit to Nairobi

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has intercepted a consignment of smuggled goods with an estimated market value of Ksh 46.77 million. This included cigarettes, shisha tobacco products, and powdered milk, with Ksh 29.177 million in taxes at risk. The interception took place along the Uganda–Kenya route following intelligence about a suspected smuggler who had evaded authorities before.

The KRA targeted a suspected smuggler using a passenger bus named Simba Coach to transport goods from Uganda to Nairobi. Upon noticing enforcement officers, the suspect fled, leading to a pursuit. The suspect was eventually detained at Kondoo within the Burnt Forest area. A search of the bus revealed hidden compartments used to conceal the smuggled goods.

The seized items included ORIS cigarette flavours worth Ksh 30.6 million, shisha tobacco flavors and accessories worth Ksh 8.398 million, and powdered milk products worth Ksh 7.768 million. The KRA emphasized its commitment to strengthening intelligence gathering, surveillance, and enforcement operations to combat smuggling and protect public health, legitimate businesses, government revenue, and promote tax compliance.
