Khairy clarifies 'PM-in-waiting' remark on Zahid

Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has clarified his remarks regarding Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's potential candidacy for prime minister. Khairy did not endorse Zahid's bid for the top position; instead, he emphasized that Zahid's speech showcased a broader vision for Malaysia.

Khairy stated that his remark was based on his assessment that Zahid had articulated a comprehensive vision for the country, rather than delivering a speech solely focused on party politics. He clarified that the speech was not an attempt to flatter Zahid, but rather acknowledged that Zahid had thought about what he wanted to achieve when he becomes prime minister.

Khairy pointed to Zahid's reference to the "Blue Malaysia Agenda" and eight strategic initiatives aimed at preparing Malaysia for its centenary of independence in 2057 as evidence of the broader vision outlined in his speech. These areas included science and technology, the future economy, rural socioeconomic transformation, racial inclusiveness, and proposals relating to government revenue, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

While Khairy does not predict Zahid's eventual ascension to the prime minister's office, he emphasized that this speech marked a significant departure from a typical party president's address. He described it as a speech from someone with greater ambition, ready to present their vision for the country when they assume the prime minister's role.
