Kenya’s 5G subscriptions exceed two million for first time

Kenya has reached a milestone with 5G subscriptions surpassing two million for the first time, according to the latest data released by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA). The growth in 5G users has surged by 69% compared to the previous year, bringing the total number of 5G subscribers to 2.1 million. This increase comes as more consumers are drawn to faster mobile broadband connectivity.

In contrast, the usage of older networks, such as 2G and 3G, has been declining. CA's Fourth Quarter Statistics Report highlights that 2G subscriptions fell by 27% to 9.3 million, while 3G subscriptions dropped by 39% to 4.5 million subscribers. On the other hand, 4G remained the most widely used network with 48 million subscriptions, accounting for 85.5% of total internet subscriptions.

CA emphasizes that mobile data consumption on both 4G and 5G networks has consistently increased, while 3G usage continues to decline as users opt for high-speed mobile broadband services. The report also notes that during the 2025/26 financial year, 2G subscriptions decreased by 27%, and 3G subscriptions dropped by 39%. However, 4G connections grew to 48 million, marking an 85.5% increase in mobile broadband subscriptions compared to the previous year.
