Kenyan passport moves up 5 places in global ranking

Kenya's passport has seen a notable improvement, ascending five positions in the global ranking according to the latest Henley Passport Index. Despite a marginal decrease in the number of accessible destinations without a prior visa, the country now holds the 68th spot globally, moving up from 73rd last year. The index evaluates 199 passports against 227 destinations, considering visa-free access, visa on arrival, and electronic travel authorisation.

This five-place climb is not indicative of a gain in travel access for Kenyan passport holders, but rather a relative improvement when compared to other countries' performances. Another confounding factor is the presence of various passport indices, such as a September 17, 2026 report placing Kenya at 120th globally, which inaccurately claimed the country had dropped 52 places from 68th.

This discrepancy arises from different ranking periods and methodologies. Additionally, the inbound mobility ranking, a separate metric, positions Kenya second globally, reflecting the ease with which citizens from 123 countries can enter the country. However, this figure does not imply that Kenyan passport holders can visit 123 countries visa-free, but rather indicates the opposite.

Therefore, for Kenyan travelers, the crucial aspect remains the number of destinations accessible without a visa, rather than the relative position in the global ranking.
