Islamabad Container Rent Hits Rs. 28 Crore

Goods transporters in Islamabad are demanding approximately Rs. 280 million in compensation for containers that have been stuck in the city for nearly two weeks. The All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association reports that nearly 1,000 containers belonging to transporters are currently blocked at various intersections, with associated goods valued at millions of rupees. Daily financial losses due to this situation amount to Rs. 20,000, as per the association.

Advocate Muhammad Owais Chaudhry, speaking on behalf of the affected transporters, has urged the government to release containers carrying essential medicines and other necessary goods without delay. He emphasized the urgent need for the government to take action to prevent further financial losses for the transporters, who are currently facing daily demurrage and detention charges for the parked containers.

Chaudhry called for a transparent compensation mechanism, suggesting that the government should compensate affected transporters instead of merely issuing announcements. He proposed compensating transporters Rs. 20,000 per container per day for the inconvenience caused. Chaudhry also stressed the importance of compiling comprehensive data on all detained vehicles from various cities and urged the government to collaborate with transporters to establish a fair compensation mechanism.
