Iranians rally by the hundreds of thousands in biggest show of defiance since war began

Iranian authorities organized a massive demonstration on Friday, drawing hundreds of thousands of citizens to the streets of Tehran. This was the largest show of defiance since the recent US-Israeli attack in February, with participants pledging their willingness to fight for the nation. The rally, titled "Janfaday-e Iran" or "those who sacrifice their lives for Iran," aimed to bolster national unity amidst economic turmoil caused by the US naval blockade and new sanctions.

The government encouraged citizens to join, with state media predicting over 600,000 volunteers who would receive limited military training. Over 1 million were expected to participate in the training. The rally featured participants wearing combat uniforms and carrying flags, while onlookers cheered. The demonstrators chanted slogans like "Death to America" and "Death to Israel."

State media reported that over 300,000 people were on the streets, and the Basij, Iran's paramilitary force, estimated around 1 million would take part in the training. The rally showcased Iranian military hardware, including anti-aircraft batteries and drones used against ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The event aimed to demonstrate the country's readiness to defend itself and showcase the regime's resolve against potential threats, including hardliners like Gen. Hassan Hassanzadeh and President Masoud Pezeshkian.

This rally came after months of war and large-scale protests in January, which began over economic struggles and escalated into broader grievances. Activists estimate that over 7,000 people were killed during the protests, and tens of thousands were detained.
