IIT Bombay locks lecture hall for overnight use, students scramble for study spaces

With mid-semester exams in full swing, students at IIT Bombay faced a new challenge: finding adequate spaces to study late into the night. The Lecture Hall Complex (LHC), a traditional hub for such activities, was closed overnight as part of efforts to maintain cleanliness and security. Students expressed dissatisfaction with this decision, particularly those residing in hostels where study space was limited and Wi-Fi connectivity was either poor or nonexistent.

Following student advocacy, four rooms in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering were opened to provide an alternative study space. However, many students found these accommodations insufficient, citing a lack of charging points as a major concern. In today's digital age, devices like laptops and tablets are indispensable for accessing study material, attending online lectures, and completing assignments.

The absence of sufficient charging facilities made it difficult for students to fully utilize these alternative rooms.

Insight, IIT Bombay's student media outlet, reported on the situation, highlighting how the LHC had long been a valuable resource for students during exam periods. The traditional late-night and early-morning hours offered a much-needed respite from the demands of rigorous exam preparation, especially for those without easy access to suitable study environments at home.

While the Institute acknowledged the inconvenience, it explained that the decision to close the LHC temporarily was a necessary step to ensure a smooth examination process. The administration assured that the arrangement was temporary and aimed at facilitating the smooth conduct of exams for the current semester.
