I tested iPhone 18 Pro Max variable aperture camera and I can (almost) ditch my mirrorless

Apple's latest iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models have introduced a physical variable-aperture system to their 48MP main camera, which brings it closer to the experience of using a dedicated mirrorless camera. This feature enables users to manipulate the aperture, ranging from f/1.48 to f/4, and offers greater control over depth of field and background blur.

By employing a wider f/1.48 aperture, users can achieve a more pronounced bokeh effect, isolating subjects for portraits and close-ups. Conversely, using a narrower f/4 aperture keeps the entire frame in focus.

The f/1.48 aperture setting proves particularly useful in low-light situations, enhancing the iPhone's Night mode performance by allowing more light to reach the sensor. This results in cleaner exposures, faster shutter speeds, and better optical depth of field. However, it's essential to maintain a certain distance from the subject to avoid any blurring caused by handshake.

The variable aperture system also extends to video recording, providing users with manual control over the aperture settings. This feature fills a long-standing gap in the iPhone's capabilities, enabling creators to achieve the desired cinematic aesthetic with precise control over background separation and focus. Although the variable aperture system is currently limited to the 48MP main camera, Apple's inclusion of the feature represents a significant step forward in mobile photography, delivering authentic background blur and natural focus falloff that nearly justifies the replacement of dedicated mirrorless cameras.
