Hyrox athlete who soiled herself apologises for continuing race

Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk found herself at the center of controversy after participating in a Hyrox indoor fitness race in Beijing while soiled by excrement. Despite the incident, she chose to continue the race, which drew significant backlash due to potential health risks for other competitors. Wietrzyk, a world record holder and 23-year-old, later apologized for her decision to continue despite the situation.

She acknowledged that she should have stepped away from the race and expressed regret for not doing so. The 23-year-old offered her sincere apologies to China, her fellow competitors, spectators, and the Hyrox organizers. She stated that she had withdrawn her points from the race retrospectively and would be taking time to recover and reflect.

Hyrox, a popular fitness competition, features a mix of treadmill running and strength exercises. Co-founder Moritz Furste also apologized for the incident, stating that the company made a mistake by not reacting immediately during the race. The company has since updated its rules to include a clause for immediate withdrawal of a racer if their blood, vomit, urine, or faeces pose a health or contamination risk to themselves or other participants.
