Hundreds rally at Turkey’s embassy in Uganda to demand a dissident’s extradition

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Hundreds of Ugandans gathered outside the Turkish Embassy on Friday to demand the extradition of a dissident named Fred Lumbuye. The protest was organized by the Patriotic League of Uganda, a group chaired by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Lumbuye, who has lived in Turkey for years, faces allegations of anti-government propaganda, incitement and cybercrimes.

The rally came as Kainerugaba, the eldest son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has been vocal in his opposition to Turkish authorities. He had previously demanded $1 billion and the "most beautiful woman" from Turkey to avoid diplomatic relations or closing the embassy. Kainerugaba, who has aspirations to become Uganda's president in 2031, has also called for the withdrawal of all Ugandan troops from Somalia by August 2027.
